Alkere is the Kaytetye word for sky. I did this small collection while living and working on Warramunga Country in Tennant Creek. A place I call home. My nanna Kathy’s Country. It was a hot summer consistently above 40 degrees. During the blistering hot days dashing from airconditioned building to the next, the sky always stopped me in my tracks. Reminded me to look up. To pause. This working period was following a difficult period in my life. Being on my nanna’s country with my family, looking after community, getting back to medicine, reminded me of who I am. As an Aboriginal woman and as a doctor. The sky in Tennant Creek were often a gentle reminder that we should always be looking up. That sky is also Country. This painting is the fourth painting in the Alkere series.
