Sega's answer to Tetris that used falling columns of colored jewels instead of tetrominoes. Players matched three or more gems of the same color vertically, horizontally, or diagonally to clear them. The original Columns was a pack-in game for the Game Gear and became synonymous with the handheld, much like Tetris was synonymous with the Game Boy. Super Columns added new modes and mechanics to the beloved formula. Puzzle games were the killer app for handheld gaming in the early '90s, and Columns was Sega's crown jewel. Literally. Match three.
