First taking flight on January 7, 1942, it successfully introduced the extreme speed and agility of land-based interceptors to the demanding environment of aircraft carrier decks during World War II and the Korean War. A total of 2,646 Supermarine Seafire aircraft were built. This complete production figure consists of 2,094 entirely new-build aircraft alongside 538 land-based Spitfires that were converted into the carrier-ready configuration.
