On the island of Java in Indonesia is an ancient city called Surakarta. This game has been played there for centuries and was not spread internationally until the late 20th century . Today it's seen a renewed popularity, and deservedly so. The attractive board art doesn't convey the unique challenges of Surakarta right away. The two player's pieces start aligned like a typical abstract strategy game and move along the lines orthogonally like one would expect. But a capturing move must include a sliding journey around at least one of the corner loops in a sweeping Rook-like move to capture an opposing piece, landing on the same space.
