We teach the importance of ocean safety, how to identify rip currents and how to read ocean conditions. Every lesson starts with a warm up with some surf specific stretches and practice rounds learning the technique to stand up on the board. After that it’s into the ocean to learn how to paddle properly and catch your first wave! There is over an hour of hands on practice in the water. Surfboard and leash are provided. These classes are taught at no more than 1 instructor per 5 students. Important Details: Age Restrictions: Group lessons: 7 years old and up Private lessons: 6 years old and up Swimming Ability: All participants must be able to swim in the ocean. Waivers: Required for all participants. Scheduling: Lessons are offered 7 days a week, with varying times by location. Please arrive 5 minutes early for your session. What’s provided? Surfboard and leash (included) Wetsuit available upon request (no extra charge) Where are lessons held? Group Lessons: Available at Duck (Sanderling Resort) and Kitty Hawk. Private Lessons: Offered in Corolla, Nags Head, and Rodanthe. (Note: Locations may change based on sandbar conditions.) What should I wear? We recommend wearing a swimsuit. Another consideration would be wearing a rash guard they can be useful in protecting you from the sun and the surf during your lesson. Wetsuits will be provided for lessons through colder months Oct-Apr. What should I bring? We always recommend bringing sunscreen, water shoes, water, and a towel. When will I know the time of my lesson? Even though you can select a time online, lesson times are dictated by swell, tides, wind, location and ages involved. Due to the changing nature of these factors, official lesson times might not be announced until the week of. If you are unable to wait until our announcement please contact us via phone or email. Cancelation Policy We have a strict 48-hour cancellation policy. A full refund will be given in the event you cancel outside of 48 hours. Cancellations made by your party within 48 hours will receive no refund. We can make exceptions for unexpected emergencies or illnesses. If we cancel due to weather or wave conditions, you may reschedule or be refunded 100% of the money.
