Remember the relief of that first breath after surfacing? Surface was inspired by a free dive I made in Fiji many years ago. Using a reference photograph of my descent, I chose to instead reimagine the moment of returning to the surface, just before that first breath. The painting isn't about going under, it's about coming home to air. Rendered entirely in colored pencil using a heated Icarus Board, the piece allowed me to build transparent layers that capture bubbles, refracted light, and the distortion of water surrounding the figure. The technical process demanded the same patience, control, and focus required in the water itself. Surface became an important part of my ongoing exploration of women in water, not simply as a physical setting, but as a place of reflection, resilience, and renewal. Surface was featured in Artistonish Magazine's Issue # 65 and as a Finalist in Exhibizone's Stillness Exhibition and received an Honorable Mention in Tervarna's 10th Figurative Iternational Juried Art Competition.
