Remember the relief of that first breath after surfacing? Surface was inspired by a free dive I made in Fiji many years ago. Using a reference photograph of my descent, I chose to instead reimagine the moment of returning to the surface, just before that first breath. The painting isn't about going under, it's about coming home to air. Rendered entirely in colored pencil using a heated Icarus Board, the piece allowed me to build transparent layers that capture bubbles, refracted light, and the distortion of water surrounding the figure. The technical process demanded the same patience, control, and focus required in the water itself. Surface became an important part of my ongoing exploration in the series Women in the Water, not simply as a physical setting, but as a place of reflection, resilience, and renewal. Surface was featured in Artistonish Magazine's Issue # 65, a Finalist in Exhibizone's Stillness Exhibition, received an Honorable Mention in Teravarna's 10th Figurative International Juried Art Competition, was selected by the O'Hanlon Center for the Arts show Women's Work, Women Artists Making Their Mark 2026 a juried online exhibition, and was selected as a finalist for The Language of Water, a juried online exhibition presented by Palm Art Gallery.
