Süsswassertang, commonly referred to as Subwassertang, is a timeless freshwater plant that is a little bit of an oddity! Scientifically, it is most closely related to Lomariopsis lineata, but could easily pass as an aquatic moss or liverwort. It is commonly compared to Monosolenium tenerum (Mini Pellia) but features darker green plant tissue that is slightly translucent. This hardy aquatic plant is very moss-like. It is easy to care for, great for low-tech tanks, low-light setups, and is particularly popular in breeding and shrimp tanks. Its growth form provides the perfect environment for tiny critters and also serves as a natural source of filtration. It grows in a similar fashion to moss and is typically left to settle on its own, but it can also be attached to driftwood or porous surfaces. In planted tanks with strong lighting, CO2, and fertilizer dosing, its growth will increase accordingly. Overall, Subwassertang’s delicate form adds unique texture and is both an ornamental and functional addition to any freshwater planted aquarium.
