Spinal Formula | Natural IVDD and Disc Support
Sustenance Herbs · Spinal Formula The Spine Is Not a Joint. And Most Joint Supplements Do Not Know That. Six certified organic and wildcrafted ingredients built specifically for th e connective tissue, discs, ligaments, and nerve structures that make the spine different from every other joint in the body. For dogs with IVDD, disc disease, spondylosis, and spinal injury. ✓ Certified Organic ✓ NASC Certified ✓ Small-Batch Handcrafted ✓ Non-GMO Why the spine needs different support Glucosamine builds cartilage. The spine does not run on cartilage. If your dog has been diagnosed with IVDD or has spinal problems, you have probably already encountered the same formulas: glucosamine, chondroitin, MSM, turmeric. Standard joint supplements. Here is the problem. The spine does not work like a standard joint. A conventional joint like the hip or knee is cushioned primarily by cartilage. The intervertebral discs have very little true cartilage. What they have instead is a tough outer ring of fibrous connective tissue called the annulus fibrosus, and a gel-like inner core called the nucleus pulposus. The ligaments that hold each vertebra in alignment and protect the spinal cord are almost entirely composed of collagen-rich connective tissue. Standard joint supplements Provide building blocks for cartilage repair. Meaningful for hips and knees. Not the primary structure the spine relies on. Spinal Formula Supports the fibrous connective tissue of discs and ligaments, collagen synthesis, leukotriene-pathway inflammation, nerve tissue protection, and adrenal stress resilience. Built for the spine specifically. For the spine, the priority is connective tissue. The collagen matrix that holds discs together. The ligaments that keep vertebrae aligned and protect the spinal cord. The nerve tissue that, when compressed or inflamed, generates the pain, weakness, and neurological changes that make spinal conditions so debilitating. Spinal Formula by Sustenance Herbs is built around all of it. The biology behind the conditions What is actually happening in a dog with disc disease or spinal problems. In all spinal conditions, the same three things are needed: support for the connective tissue structures holding the spine together, reduction of the inflammatory cascade driving ongoing damage, and protection of the nerve tissue being compressed or inflamed. Spinal Formula addresses all three, specifically and directly. Hansen Type I IVDD Common in chondrodystrophic breeds (Dachshunds, French Bulldogs, Corgis, Beagles). Disc material mineralizes early, becomes brittle, and ruptures. Disc material protrudes into the spinal canal, compressing the cord and nerve roots. Hansen Type II IVDD Common in larger breeds as they age. The outer fibrous ring degenerates over time and bulges outward under normal pressure, creating progressive compression, pain, and neurological symptoms rather than a sudden rupture event. Spondylosis Degenerative spinal arthritis most common in older large and giant breeds. Bony spurs form along the vertebrae in response to chronic instability, creating ongoing inflammation, stiffness, and chronic pain throughout the spinal column. The full formula Six ingredients. Every dimension of spinal health that natural medicine can meaningfully support. Solomon's Seal for the fibrous connective tissue no other supplement targets. Boswellia to protect that tissue from the inflammatory pathway most damaging to it. Bupleurum for the neuroinflammation dimension of disc disease. Amalaki for collagen synthesis and antioxidant protection. Schisandra and Eleuthero for the chronic stress response that perpetuates spinal pain. Responsibly Wildcrafted Solomon's Seal Connective tissue · the ingredient that makes this formula spinal-specific In traditional herbal medicine, Solomon's Seal is a trophorestorative for connective tissue, meaning it actively promotes the repair, regeneration, and nourishment of ligaments, tendons, and fibrous structures. For the spine specifically, it supports the annulus fibrosus, the tough outer ring of the disc, and the spinal ligaments that hold each vertebra in alignment. It also has lubricating and moistening properties that help maintain disc hydration and pliability, directly addressing the degeneration process. Solomon's Seal is the reason this formula exists as a spinal-specific product rather than a generic joint supplement. Certified Organic Amalaki, Amla Berry Collagen synthesis · the rate-limiting nutrient spinal tissue needs One of the most concentrated natural sources of Vitamin C available. Vitamin C is the rate-limiting nutrient for collagen synthesis, meaning the body cannot produce collagen without it regardless of how many other nutrients are present. For a dog with spinal issues whose discs and supporting ligaments need ongoing collagen synthesis for repair and maintenance, Amalaki directly enables that work. It also contains Superoxide Dismutase, which neutralizes the free radicals most responsible for oxidative damage in disc cells, nerve tissue, and spinal blood supply. Certified Organic Schisandra Berry Neuroprotection · nerve tissue defense and adaptogenic resilience Has documented neuroprotective activity, meaning it protects nerve tissue from damage and supports the nervous system's own repair processes. For a dog with disc disease where nerve roots and the spinal cord are under compression and inflammatory stress, protecting nerve tissue from additional damage while the other herbs address inflammation creates the best possible environment for neurological recovery. Also supports the liver's management of chronic inflammatory signaling and helps the body maintain balance under the physiological stress of ongoing spinal pain. Certified Organic Eleuthero Root Adaptogen · breaking the cortisol-inflammation cycle of chronic pain Spinal pain is a chronic stressor. It elevates cortisol consistently over time, and sustained cortisol elevation suppresses immune function, impairs tissue repair, and perpetuates systemic inflammation through hormonal pathways. For a dog living with ongoing spinal pain from IVDD or spondylosis, the adrenal-stress dimension of that experience compounds the primary problem in ways that conventional and natural spinal supplements rarely address. Eleuthero helps regulate the stress response and supports physical stamina and recovery in dogs whose activity has been limited by spinal conditions. Certified Organic Bupleurum Root Neuroinflammation · the dimension most supplements do not reach A traditional Chinese herbal medicine botanical most Western pet parents will not have encountered. Its active compounds, saikosaponins, reduce inflammatory cytokine production and specifically target the neuroinflammation that compressed or damaged nerve tissue generates. For dogs with disc disease, where the pain and neurological symptoms are driven primarily by the inflammatory cascade around compressed nerve roots and the spinal cord, Bupleurum's targeted neuroinflammatory activity addresses the mechanism that makes disc disease so debilitating, in a way that standard anti-inflammatory herbs are less specifically suited to reach. Certified Organic Boswellia Anti-inflammatory · leukotriene pathway protection for fibrous tissue Boswellia's active compounds, boswellic acids, inhibit the enzyme that produces inflammatory leukotrienes, which are particularly destructive to connective tissue structures including the fibrous rings of intervertebral discs and the spinal ligaments. In this formula, Boswellia's connective tissue-protective anti-inflammatory action directly complements Solomon's Seal's trophorestorative activity: Solomon's Seal rebuilds and nourishes the fibrous structures, and Boswellia protects what is being rebuilt from the inflammatory processes trying to undo it. A meaningful synergy that neither produces alone. What it addresses Five spinal problems. Five targeted responses. Fibrous disc and ligament tissue losing structural integrity Solomon's Seal directly supports the repair and nourishment of these connective tissue structures, the only botanical ingredient with a specific trophorestorative role in fibrous spinal tissue. No other supplement specifically targets this dimension. Insufficient collagen synthesis for disc and ligament maintenance Amalaki's Vitamin C provides the rate-limiting nutrient that collagen production depends on. Its Superoxide Dismutase protects the cells doing that repair from the oxidative damage that chronic spinal inflammation generates. Leukotriene-driven inflammation actively degrading disc and ligament tissue Boswellia specifically blocks the leukotriene pathway, the most damaging inflammatory mechanism for fibrous connective tissue. Working in synergy with Solomon's Seal: one rebuilds, one protects what is being rebuilt. Nerve compression and neuroinflammation generating pain and neurological symptoms Schisandra's neuroprotective activity and Bupleurum's specific neuroinflammatory activity address the nerve tissue and neural inflammation dimension of spinal disease that most supplements do not reach. Chronic pain perpetuating a cortisol-driven inflammatory cycle Eleuthero and Schisandra together regulate the adrenal stress response, breaking the hormonal contribution to ongoing inflammation that the chronic pain of IVDD, spondylosis, and degenerative disc disease quietly generates over time. Once or twice daily. Administer orally using the dropper directly into the mouth or mixed into food. When first starting, begin at half the recommended dose and gradually increase to full dose over one week. Once daily Maintenance support for dogs with a history of spinal issues, dogs in spinal-prone breeds, and dogs being supported preventively before any episode occurs. Twice daily More intensive support during active flare-ups, recovery periods following disc episodes or surgery, or for dogs with significant ongoing spinal conditions requiring consistent active support. Important notes: Not for use in pregnant or lactating animals. Discontinue and consult your veterinarian if condition worsens or does not improve. Always inform your veterinarian of any supplements your dog is taking alongside prescription medications. The trophorestorative activity of Solomon's Seal and the collagen-supportive action of Amalaki both require sustained supplementation to produce their most meaningful structural benefit. Spinal connective tissue support works through consistent, long-term daily use. Questions and answers Everything you want to know before you buy. Why is a spinal supplement different from a regular joint supplement? The spine relies primarily on collagen-rich connective tissue, including the fibrous disc rings and the spinal ligaments, rather than the cartilage that standard joint supplements are designed to support. Glucosamine and chondroitin provide building blocks for cartilage. The spine has very little true cartilage. What it needs is connective tissue support, collagen synthesis support, and ingredients that specifically address the fibrous structures of the discs and ligaments. Solomon's Seal, the foundational ingredient in Spinal Formula, is a trophorestorative specifically for fibrous connective tissue rather than cartilage, which is what makes this formula genuinely spinal-specific. What does Solomon's Seal do for dogs with disc disease? Solomon's Seal is a traditional herbal trophorestorative for connective tissue, meaning it actively promotes the repair, nourishment, and regeneration of ligaments, tendons, and fibrous structures. For the spine specifically, it supports the fibrous outer ring of intervertebral discs and the spinal ligaments that hold each vertebra in alignment. It also has lubricating and moistening properties that help maintain the hydration and pliability of disc tissue. For dogs with IVDD, spondylosis, or any spinal condition involving connective tissue degeneration, Solomon's Seal is one of the most directly relevant and most unique botanical ingredients available. Can this supplement help a dog recovering from disc surgery? Yes. The recovery period following spinal surgery is one of the most meaningful windows for this formula. The surgical repair addresses the immediate mechanical problem of disc compression, but the connective tissue rehabilitation, collagen remodeling, inflammation management, and nerve recovery that follow surgery are processes the body needs nutritional support to complete effectively. This formula does not replace post-surgical veterinary care and physical therapy, but as a daily natural support alongside that conventional care, it addresses dimensions of recovery that pharmaceutical intervention alone does not cover. What breeds benefit most from a spinal formula? Any breed with spinal concerns benefits, but the most specific need is in chondrodystrophic breeds prone to Hansen Type I disc disease, including Dachshunds, French Bulldogs, Corgis, Basset Hounds, Beagles, Shih Tzus, Lhasa Apsos, and Cocker Spaniels. Large and giant breeds prone to spondylosis and Hansen Type II disc degeneration, including German Shepherds, Labrador Retrievers, Dobermans, and Great Danes, also benefit significantly. For high-risk breeds especially, beginning Spinal Formula before any disc episode occurs as a preventive daily foundation provides the most meaningful long-term protection. How does Bupleurum help dogs with disc disease? Bupleurum is a traditional Chinese herbal medicine botanical with specific anti-inflammatory activity in nerve tissue and deep structural tissue. Its active compounds reduce inflammatory cytokine production and specifically target the neuroinflammation that compressed or irritated nerve tissue generates. For dogs with disc disease, where the pain and neurological symptoms are driven primarily by the inflammatory cascade around compressed nerve roots and the spinal cord, Bupleurum's targeted neuroinflammatory activity addresses the mechanism that makes disc disease so debilitating, in a way that standard anti-inflammatory herbs like turmeric and ginger are less specifically suited to reach. Can I use this alongside conventional IVDD treatment? Yes, and this is the intended application. Spinal Formula is designed to complement conventional veterinary care for IVDD rather than replace it. Conventional anti-inflammatories and, where indicated, surgery address the acute mechanical and inflammatory crisis. Spinal Formula provides the ongoing nutritional support for connective tissue maintenance, collagen synthesis, nerve protection, and inflammatory balance that determines how well the spine recovers and how resilient it remains over the long term. Always inform your veterinarian of any supplements your dog is taking alongside prescription medications. What do holistic vets recommend for dogs with IVDD? Holistic and integrative veterinarians consistently recommend a multi-dimensional approach to IVDD combining appropriate conventional care with natural support targeting connective tissue repair, inflammatory balance, nerve protection, and whole-body stress resilience. Solomon's Seal is increasingly recognized in integrative veterinary circles as one of the most important and most unique botanicals for spinal connective tissue. Boswellia is consistently recommended for its connective-tissue-protective anti-inflammatory mechanism. Adaptogens like Eleuthero and Schisandra are recommended for the chronic stress dimension of ongoing spinal conditions. Spinal Formula combines all of these in a single formula handcrafted specifically for this application. The clean formula standard you expect 6 active botanical ingredients Solomon's Seal, responsibly wildcrafted 5 certified organic botanicals NASC certified Non-GMO, no exceptions No artificial colors, flavors, or preservatives Handcrafted in York, Maine Vet recommended Protecting the spine that connects your dog's body and brain deserves a formula built for exactly this. If your dog has had a disc episode, carries a breed predisposition to spinal problems, or has been diagnosed with any spinal condition, you have probably already learned that the spine is more complicated than a standard joint problem. The standard advice, give them a glucosamine supplement and rest, addresses very little of what is actually happening in a dog's spine. Solomon's Seal for fibrous connective tissue · Boswellia to protect it from leukotriene inflammation · Bupleurum for neuroinflammation · Amalaki for collagen synthesis and antioxidant protection · Schisandra and Eleuthero for the adrenal stress response that chronic pain perpetuates This is the supplement we would give our own dog the day they received a disc diagnosis. Or ideally, the day before they ever needed one.
