Sponge gourd (Luffa aegyptiaca) or luffa is eaten as a vegetable in it's immature stage. Also known as Galka in India. The sweet honey sponge gourd is our special selected variety, vigorous and prolific. Fruit is green in color, 2 in wide and 10 in long, weighing up to 8 oz. It has excellent taste. Maturity is in 45 days after transplanting. Known as Nenwa in Guyana. Planting Guidance: In late spring, when the soil has reached at least 70 degrees F, sow seeds in well-drained, tilled soil, three to four seeds per plant, and leave about six feet between the plants. Cover the seeds with 1/2 to 3/4 inches of fine soil, lightly tamp them, and moisten them evenly. Show more
