Panicum virgatum 'Heavy Metal' 'Heavy Metal' is a Switchgrass cultivar that features stunning metallic blue foliage and an upright form. Switchgrasses play a vital role in the expansive tallgrass prairies that once covered much of the state, but are now a much rarer sight. In July, 'Heavy Metal' will produce airy blooms with a pink tint. It's adaptable to various soils and can handle drought conditions with ease. While it's adaptable to many soil types, it particularly enjoys moist, sandy, or clay soils. It loves full sunlight and should be treated gently with fertilization. 'Heavy Metal' is one of the oldest and best-known blue cultivars of Panicum. The previous year's growth can be cut down in late January or early February. Although these plants may self-seed under optimal conditions, cultivars might not reproduce true to type from seed.
