Plant in well drained soil, though it tolerates clay and tougher conditions once established. Water regularly during the first few seasons to build a deep root system, then water deeply during extended dry spells. Mulch in a wide ring to protect the root zone and help the soil stay cool and moist, keeping mulch away from the trunk. Prune in late winter to remove crossing or crowded branches and to encourage a strong central structure while the tree is young. This is a big shade tree, so plant it far enough from buildings, driveways, and patios to allow its full crown to develop gracefully.
