The Blue Mandarin (Synchiropus splendidus) is one of the most vividly patterned fish in the hobby, covered in a swirling psychedelic mix of blue, orange, and green. It's peaceful and reef safe, but it's also a genuinely demanding fish: mandarins graze almost constantly on tiny copepods and rarely compete well for prepared foods, so they need an established tank (ideally 6+ months old) with a mature refugium or abundant live rock pod population to thrive long-term. Adult size: Around 3 in. Diet: Carnivore - copepods and other tiny live foods; will take prepared foods once trained, but shouldn't rely on this alone. Temperament: Peaceful. Reef compatibility: Reef safe, but best suited to established tanks with a strong natural pod population. Available for local pickup - in-store only. Stop by our shop in Wheeling, IL - ask our staff whether your tank's pod population is ready for a mandarin. Backed by expert support from real reefers at Marine Concept Supply.
