Traditional Polish apple cake is a favorite dessert served in Poland. The bottom crust is a cross between a dense cake and shortbread. It is lightly sweetened, allowing the apples’ warm flavors to shine. The apple filling consists of fresh apples, sugar, and szarlotka spice (cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, cardamom, ginger). The top crust is a duplication of the same dough as the bottom crust, and it is crumbled over top of the cake. To finish, it is dusted with powdered sugar.
