Mass Air Flow Sensor for the engine air intake system. The sensor is fitted in the intake duct downstream of the air filter housing, ahead of the throttle body or the turbocharger inlet on forced-induction applications. It measures the mass of air drawn into the engine and reports it to the engine management module, which uses the signal to set fuelling and, on diesel applications, the exhaust gas recirculation rate. Contamination or drift in the sensing element gives a low or erratic reading. Typical symptoms are poor throttle response, uneven idle, smoke under acceleration and loss of power, usually with an air-mass-related fault code stored.
