Takanohana was the 65th yokozuna and one of the most iconic sumo wrestlers of the modern era. A member of the famous Hanada sumo family, he won 22 top-division championships and be came the face of Japanese sumo during its hugely popular 1990s boom. Known for his powerful belt-fighting style and fierce rivalry with Akebono, Takanohana remains one of the sport’s most admired champions.
