Taking Flight navigates the tension between departure and remembrance. At its centre, a hauntingly translucent skull emerges over a historical illustration of a rowboat crowded wit h figures, a poignant reminder of collective journeys and the weight of the past. Layered over this are light-hearted, naïve line drawings, flowers, clouds, and in the top right, a simple plane, the very element that gives the piece its name. The plane feels almost childlike in its simplicity, a contrast to the skull’s gravity, inviting the viewer to reflect on the balance of memory, mortality, and the quiet hope of taking flight.
