On a bare plastic kit those flaws are invisible until the colour coat finds them. It is the right primer for the majority of subjects, because a mid grey ground shifts almost any colour laid over it the least. Tamiya primers can be wet-sanded once cured, so a heavy coat over a repaired area can be brought back flat before painting.
