It is the blue-violet variety of zoisite, named by Tiffany & Co. in 1968, and strongly pleochroic — blue, violet and burgundy depending on the angle, three colours from one crystal. Virtually all tanzanite is heat-treated to bring out the blue; the rough is usually brownish. A modern December birthstone.
