Andrei Protsouk was born in Donetsk in 1961, the son of a photographer and a master embroiderer. He trained at the prestigious Ilya Repin Leningrad Institute — widely regarded as one of the world's finest art programmes — studying under Evsey Moiseenko, a contemporary of Chagall and Picasso who adopted Protsouk as his protégé. In 1994 he moved with his family to the United States, where his palette brightened and his subjects turned to joy: couples in passionate dances, embraces, moments of love and levity rendered in vibrant colour and vigorous line. He has completed commissions for Johnnie Walker and Coca Cola and works today from his own gallery in Pennsylvania.
