Yellow Tangs are a popular choice for beginner aquarists, because of its bright sunshine yellow color, fantastic shape, bold personalities and relative ease of care. The Yellow Tang is an active swimmer that will glide throughout your aquarium in near constant motion, acting as an aquarium tour guide of sorts to any onlooker who follows its meandering swim path. Unlike any of the other tang species though, if it is added with others of its same species when very young they may be successfully kept in groups of 3 or more and will school. They are bright yellow in color, have a long continuous dorsal and anal fins and crescent tailfins. The scalpel at the base of their tailfin is very sharp and is used by the fish for protection from predators as well as a way of establishing itself with other fish. The Hawaiian Yellow Tang will reach a length of 6 inches, is considered to be "reef safe", and should be kept in an aquarium larger than 75 gallons to provide plenty of swimming room. Diet: Yellow Tangs are known to be herbivores and help keep corals healthy by preventing overgrowth of algae by feeding around them. They are happy to graze along rocks and coral for algae in the ocean. But when in a tank, you will need to provide them with little more nutrients. Sometimes as an adult it will consume algae as a supplement to it's regular diet, but it's staple diet consists of plankton and meaty foods. Feed frozen mysis shrimp, finely chopped raw shrimp, flake, pellet and frozen preparations. They will also enjoy eating frozen preparations for herbivores.
