This intimate sculpture reflects Tapta's enduring fascination with the expressive dialogue between flexible and rigid materials. The supple neoprene element curves gracefully around copper, generating a composition in which tension, balance and movement become the primary sculptural subjects. Although modest in scale, the work possesses the same spatial ambition that defines the artist's monumental installations. Every curve responds to gravity while simultaneously resisting it, creating an elegant equilibrium between softness and structural precision. The combination of warm copper and deep black neoprene highlights Tapta's pioneering contribution to post-war sculpture, where industrial materials are transformed into objects of remarkable poetic resonance. Tapta, pseudonym of the Polish-Belgian sculptor Maria Wierusz-Kowalski (1926–1997), arrived in Belgium as a political refugee after the Warsaw Uprising of 1944 and trained as a weaver at La Cambre in Brussels. From the late 1980s she turned from textile to industrial neoprene, joining rubber panels with metal fittings into open, articulated structures. She led La Cambre's textile workshop, from 1976 to 1990, shaping a generation of Belgian sculptors.
