It is an analogy that was created by a woman named Christine Miserandino, who was struggling to explain to her friend what it was like to live her life and in her body, with having to ration and portion out her energy resources to help her get through to the end of the day. She gave her friend a set of teaspoons, and told her to go about her day - but every activity would cost her friend a spoon. Soon enough the friend learns that she doesn’t have enough spoons to do what she wants and needs to in a day and had to start to make calculated decisions on what she would and would not hypothetically do. But this reality is not hypothetical for many of us — it’s our daily reality. The spoon theory is about navigating chronic illness, energy management and pacing/fatigue techniques. It helps explain in an easy to understand way what it is like to not be able to do everything you want in a day. For people with chronic illness, a huge following has developed and a community who refer to themselves as “spoonies”. Regardless, it’s a huge and powerful way to help explain what it is like day to day in a body with illness.
