A CD player, an FM tuner, a moving-magnet phono stage, a full network streamer and a full-digital amplifier in a box 340mm wide. Add speakers and a turntable and the system is finished. The SA-C600 is the most complete single box Technics makes. Inside it: a CD mechanism that reads CD, CD-R and CD-RW in both 8cm and 12cm sizes; an FM tuner; a moving-magnet phono input with its own dedicated power supply; Ethernet, dual-band Wi-Fi and Bluetooth; AirPlay 2 and Chromecast; Spotify Connect, TIDAL, Deezer, Qobuz, Amazon Music and internet radio all named on Technics’ own spec sheet; USB-A for a drive and USB-B for a computer; and a full-digital amplifier with JENO Engine to drive it all. The phono stage having its own power supply is not a detail to skip past. In a box this densely packed, with a network module and a spinning disc a few centimetres away, the hardest thing to get right is keeping a few millivolts of cartridge signal clean. Technics giving it a separate supply is the right instinct. A Twin Power Supply Circuit System does the same job at the amplifier end, isolating the power amplifier’s supply from everything else. Now the part we have to be straight about, which is the power rating. Technics publishes three different figures for this amplifier and two of them are labelled FTC. The consistent rated figure across their US, UK and Australian pages is 60W + 60W at 1kHz, 1.0% THD into 4Ω. The North American owner’s manual gives that same 60W figure and then adds a separate line labelled “FTC output power: 40W + 40W (1kHz, THD 1.0%, 4Ω).” Elsewhere Technics’ US site states an FTC rating of 20W + 20W across 20Hz–20kHz at 1.0% THD+N into 8Ω. Only the last of those actually follows FTC methodology, which requires continuous power across the full 20Hz to 20kHz band with both channels driven. The manual’s “FTC” line is a single-frequency measurement wearing the wrong label. All three figures are listed below because all three are Technics’, but if you want the number that means what an American amplifier power rating is supposed to mean, it is 20W + 20W into 8Ω. That is a modest but entirely sensible amount of power for a compact system, and it drives Technics’ own SB-C600 bookshelf speakers happily. One connection note: there is a subwoofer output but no general-purpose preamp output, unlike the SU-GX70 and the larger amplifiers. A conventional damping-factor figure is arguably less meaningful for a switching output stage, but Technics does not say that either — the row is simply absent. JENO Engine: JENO Engine — Jitter Elimination and Noise-shaping Optimisation. A clock generator and re-clocking stage that Technics says reduces jitter across the entire frequency range. Jitter is timing error in the digital signal; left alone it smears detail, and it is the single most audible failing of an indifferent digital front end. The SA-C600 is listed in Technics’ own US warranty table at three years parts and three years labour. Technics states that product registration is not required and does not extend coverage. A dated sales receipt is required, coverage runs to the original purchaser, and the product must be purchased and serviced in the United States.
