If you were doing well in the ‘60s and ’70s, you had a phone put in. Most homes would have had the classic GPO rotary phone which usually arrived along with a huge telephone direct ory and a Yellow Pages. Its unique finger-dialling sound is fondly etched in my memory but its alarming ring tone could be heard down the street. Coming in a variety of colours, use was closely monitored by parents especially when ‘dial-a-disc’ came in where we could dial 160 for the latest hits between 6pm and 8am. Show more
