Collaboration between pediatricians and SLPs is the backbone of good care for tethered oral tissue, and this self-study course explains how to build it. SLPs are increasingly at the forefront of identifying tethered oral tissue and its impact on speech and swallowing development, but SLPs and parents rely heavily on a child's pediatrician to acknowledge evaluation reports and make timely referrals, which makes collaboration between pediatricians and SLPs essential rather than optional. Presenters Rajeev Agarwal, MD, FAAP, and Ramya Kumar, MS, CCC-SLP, CNT, IBCLC, share how they built a working partnership between a pediatric practice and an SLP practice to provide comprehensive care in this area. The course walks through case studies highlighting what that collaboration looks like in practice, covering topics like breastfeeding dyads, medically complex patients, bottle feeding difficulties, and challenges with solids. Rather than presenting collaboration as an abstract goal, the course gives concrete factors each side of the partnership should consider, from what a pediatrician should watch for during patient visits to what an SLP needs to do to build trust with a pediatrician's office. By the end, participants will be able to identify red flags for tethered oral tissue that pediatricians should consider, identify reasons to pursue an SLP evaluation before release, and list ways to build collaborations with local pediatricians. Delivered as a self-study course with CEU credit, it gives both sides of the care team a shared vocabulary and a practical path toward stronger referral relationships.
