He remembers the strange calm that settled over him then, the quiet feeling that he should stay, that he should see what Tenox wanted. The tendril moved closer, slow and careful, as if learning the shape of him before touching. Then the need to breathe hit him. The moment shattered. Instinct dragged him toward the surface, lungs burning as he broke through the water for air. When he looked back down, the skull was just another pale shape in the sand. The tendrils were gone. But sometimes, when the sea is still and the docks fall quiet, he admits there’s one thought he can’t shake.
