Tequila Ocho Plata Puntas Overproof 750ML is a rare, overproof blanco tequila bottled at still strength, ranging from 50.5% to 54% ABV depending on vintage. What sets this expression apart is its "puntas" cut — the highly prized fraction taken from the very end of the heads and beginning of the heart during distillation, a portion traditionally reserved by the distiller for personal enjoyment with friends and family. Quick Facts: ABV: 50.5–54% (varies by vintage) | Origin: Arandas, Jalisco, Mexico | Blanco / Overproof | Distillery: Tequilera Los Alambiques Production & Heritage Tequila Ocho is produced at Tequilera Los Alambiques in Arandas, in the highlands (Los Altos) of Jalisco. The liquid starts with 100% estate-grown Blue Weber agave, slow-cooked in traditional brick ovens before being crushed through a mechanical roller mill. Fermentation takes place in open-air wooden vats using naturally occurring ambient yeast — a practice that contributes to the spirit's complexity — followed by double distillation in copper pot stills. While most high-proof tequilas bottle only the corazón (heart) of the distillation run, the Puntas expression isolates a far narrower slice of the distillate, capturing the intense, aromatic fraction that sits right between the heads and the heart. This selective cut yields a spirit with more concentrated agave character and a notably different texture than a standard blanco. Tasting Notes Aroma: The nose opens with vibrant, raw agave and a pronounced minerality. Layers of dried fruit and salted chocolate emerge underneath, along with a subtle floral lift that hints at lime blossom. Taste: The entry is bold and assertive — overripe cooked agave and bright citrus dominate the front palate. At mid-palate, green chile, charred pineapple, and cacao spiciness develop, framed by a persistent black pepper note. The higher proof amplifies each flavor without masking the underlying agave sweetness, delivering a butterscotch richness that balances the heat. Finish: Long, creamy, and warming with a distinctly astringent edge. Lingering minerality and saline notes carry through, leaving a clean impression of cooked agave and dried lime peel. How to Drink Ocho Puntas Neat is the purest way to experience the Puntas expression — the higher proof rewards a small splash of water to open up the dried fruit and chocolate aromatics without diluting the texture. For cocktails, the overproof backbone shines where standard blancos can get lost: Margarita: The elevated ABV punches through fresh lime and triple sec, delivering a margarita with genuine agave presence rather than a citrus-dominated drink. Paloma: Grapefruit soda typically overwhelms lighter tequilas, but Ocho Puntas holds its ground, adding earthy depth and peppery bite. Tequila Old Fashioned: The butterscotch and cacao notes pair naturally with agave syrup and mole bitters, producing a stirred cocktail with real weight. It delivers bold cooked agave, charred pineapple, green chile, and cacao spice, with a creamy butterscotch quality and a long, peppery finish. The overproof strength intensifies every flavor without veering into harsh alcohol heat. How does Ocho Puntas compare to Pasote Overproof? Both are highland-produced, overproof blancos using traditional methods, but Ocho Puntas specifically isolates the "puntas" fraction of the distillation run rather than bottling the full heart at still strength. This narrower cut tends to yield a more concentrated, aromatic spirit with a distinct texture. Is Ocho Puntas good for sipping neat? Yes — despite its elevated proof, the creamy mouthfeel and complex layering of agave, mineral, and spice notes make it a compelling neat pour. A few drops of water can help open up the dried fruit and chocolate aromas. Where is Ocho Puntas made? It is produced at Tequilera Los Alambiques in Arandas, located in the Los Altos (highlands) region of Jalisco, Mexico. The distillery uses estate-grown Blue Weber agave from surrounding highland fields. What foods pair well with Ocho Puntas? Grilled carne asada benefits from the spirit's peppery heat; dark chocolate or mole dishes complement the cacao and dried fruit notes; fresh ceviche mirrors the citrus and saline character; aged manchego or cotija cheese matches the creamy, mineral backbone; and roasted green chiles echo the vegetal spice on the mid-palate. What sizes does Ocho Puntas come in? The standard release is a 750ml bottle, which is the primary format available for this expression. Is Ocho Puntas worth the price? Ocho Puntas positions as a premium, limited-release overproof blanco — a category with very few competitors. The vintage-specific bottling, traditional production methods, and rare puntas distillation cut justify its placement above standard blanco pricing, particularly for drinkers who value transparency and provenance in their agave spirits. Why Ocho Puntas? The puntas cut is the single most distinctive element of this bottling. Where virtually every other overproof tequila on the market bottles the heart of distillation at full strength, Ocho isolates a narrower, more aromatic fraction that was historically never sold commercially — it was the distiller's personal reserve. Combined with open-air fermentation using wild yeast, traditional brick-oven cooking, and copper pot still distillation, the result is a blanco with uncommon depth, weight, and complexity. Each vintage carries a different proof and flavor profile reflecting that year's agave harvest, making Ocho Puntas one of the few tequilas that rewards vertical comparison the way single-origin wines do.
