Ottenimenti - Mario Siragusa Rubiana, Piedmonte, Italy 100% Montanera. Grapes purchased from a grower in Val Pellice, a neighbouring valley in the Italian Alps just south of Val Susa. Similarly with its own unique history of local grapes. Montanera is also called Vej Dusset or Vecchio Dolcetto by the old farmers of the region. Not much is still cultivated, and it's Mario’s first time encountering this old variety. More black in colour than red with thick skins, making a deep and dark wine. Grapes remained in contact with the skins for 2 weeks, and all the juice was drawn off without pressing, so only free-run juice. Mario explains, pressing would have drawn too much intense colour out of the grapes, and lengthened the vinification time. With little tannin present, the fruit shines with its plummy sappiness. It’s dark with a grapey agreeability, and rounded out with earthiness, coffee, and a salty finish.
