In 1916, the University of Texas's Bureau of Economic Geology and Technology published this geological map of Texas, prepared by geologist Johan August Udden together with C.L. Baker and Emil Bose. Udden had joined the university's Mineral Survey in 1904 and would go on to direct the Bureau; his analysis of well cuttings helped identify the oil and potash deposits that were reshaping the state's economy in the years around this map's publication. We georeferenced the original 1916 survey and applied modern digital elevation data to add true shaded relief to Texas's landscape. The shading is printed flat on the paper — not raised or textured — so it frames and hangs like any fine art print.
