Hardy native fruit tree with small, dark purple-black fruits that are delicious in puddings and custards, should be cooked to reduce astringency. Native tribes used it to make blac k dye. Inner heartwood of very large trees is a gorgeous ebony that takes a fine polish. Compact, intricately branching, and drought tolerant, good also as an ornamental.
