Because clay shrinks during drying and kiln firing, you need to start with a longer piece of clay than your finished size. Follow these steps: Measure your finger circumference snugly in mm (or use a ring sizer) Add 2–3 mm ease for comfort Multiply by the factor below to get your starting clay length (accounting for shrinkage) Clay Type Shrinkage Start with this much MORE clay Multiply finished length by Fine Silver (e.g. PMC3, Art Clay) 8–12% ~10–14% longer × 1.09–1.14 Silver clay (higher shrink) 15–22% ~18–28% longer × 1.18–1.28 Copper clay 20–28% ~25–39% longer × 1.25–1.39 Bronze clay 25–30% ~33–43% longer × 1.33–1.43 Example: Size M women’s finger (52 mm circumference) + 2 mm ease = 54 mm finished length. Using bronze clay at 30% shrinkage, start with 54 × 1.43 = ~77 mm of clay — well within the 145 mm mat. Even a men’s XL (68 mm) at 30% shrinkage needs only ~97 mm, leaving plenty of spare mat.
