The game is happening somewhere off-frame, pulling every eye but his. Shot handheld on a Noblex 35mm panoramic camera — a camera designed for a tripod, requiring absolute stillness — the image stretches the scene across its wide format with the warmth and grain of film. Hoeffgen held his breath and got it. The slight curve of the panoramic lens bends the building in the background gently, giving the crowd a sense of being gathered, contained, held together by something larger than themselves. This is Lagos in 1999 in one frame: football, politics, community, and the beautiful indifference of people fully alive in their own moment.
