Released in 1972, "The Biscuit Eater" is a Walt Disney family drama directed by Vincent McEveety and starring Earl Holliman, Pat Crowley, Lew Ayres and Godfrey Cambridge. Johnny Whitaker plays Lonnie, a boy who forms a deep bond with an apparently untrainable bird dog and sets out with his friend Text to prove the animal’s worth in a field trial. Based on James Street’s short story and remade from the 1940 film of the same name, the picture belongs to Disney’s long tradition of stories about children and animals. Its themes of loyalty, perseverance and friendship, together with Whitaker’s assured performance, have helped it remain a fondly remembered example of the studio’s early-1970s live-action output.
