The Brontë Jumper, in a natural 'ecru' wool yarn, is a continuation to our Gansey range of jumpers, and like our other Ganseys takes it name from another of our literary heroes; or three heroines on this occasion.Charlotte, Emily and Anne Brontë were all novelists and poets all wrote what is considered masterpieces of literature. As was common in the 19th century, alll three sisters published their work under male pseudonyms ; Currer, Ellis, and Acton Bell.All sister's lived in the neightbouring county of Yorkshire, but often visited the Peak District and Derbyshire. This is most telling in Charlotte's 1847 novel 'Jane Eyre'. The novel is set largely at the fictitious home of the male romantic lead Edward Fairfax Rochester; Thornfield Hall. Due to the imposing nature of the Hall, it is often considered a character in its own right.The hall, gothic and haunting, accentuates the melancholy of the characters and the overall plot. The grounds, on the other hand provide a more cheerful setting during the novels happier scenes.The Hall is said to be inspired in part by North Lees Hall in Hathersage, Derbyshire. The secluded location, the Elizabethan manor, with its battlement design was all Brontë needed for her inspiration. Hathersage itself is believed to be the inspiration for the village of Morton.It is considered, along with Jane Austen's 'Pride & Prejudice' to be the most famous romantic novels of all time.Ganseys (or ‘Guernseys’) are steeped in maritime history.Known as the 'fishersmans jumper', they were an integral and invaluable item of clothing for sailors and fishermen, especially those who were based along the Eastern Coast of the UK.Our ganseys have dropped shoulders and a traditional square stand-up collar, with a unique detail on the shoulders.
