As a photographer, I'm proud of this photograph. I also had the pleasure of being part of it — you can see my towel next to the man in the white panama hat. This was a little cove near Monopoli where my husband and I swam every day, ate figs with the local who generously offered them, and watched the crowd change from morning to late afternoon. The card players were faithful. They showed up every day and revelled in the enjoyment of swimming, sunning, friendship, and playing. It was a beautiful lesson in allowing yourself to enjoy life — producing nothing other than love, joy, and memories. In square format, it becomes a modern artwork of Italian life at its most essential.
