Field Notes’ 66th Quarterly Limited Edition for Spring 2025, titled “The Chicago Look,” delves into a unique chapter of American design and typography, spotlighting a once-prominen t but now-defunct company. The Beverly Sign Co. placed Chicago at the forefront of mid-century sign painting with its innovative “panelized” layouts, distinctive typographic styles, and striking color schemes. This approach became synonymous with “The Chicago Look.” The set features two covers designed by Chicago’s Heart & Bone Signs and Bob Behounek, inspired by Beverly’s original pencil sketches, complete with the characteristic diagonal “strike-thru” that indicated color choices to clients and sign painters.
