Around 10 to 20 thousand years ago, a star 20x the size of our sun exploded in a violent supernova explosion - expelling shells of hot hydrogen, oxygen, and other elements out into space. Estimated to be about 2,400 light years from Earth, we are seeing this explosion as it was 7,500 - 17,500 years after it happened. Seen in this image is only a small portion of the entire remnants of the supernova explosion, known as the Eastern Veil Nebula - a portion of what's also known as the Cygnus Loop. Imaged from my backyard, I used the HOO palette to produce this image, meaning I gathered exposures with a hydrogen and oxygen filter and assigned hydrogen to red and oxygen to blue and green to produce the color seen in the nebula.Please note this image is heavily compressed for the website.
