The tide has gone out and the whole estuary has changed character. Sailboats that were floating this morning have settled into the sand at whatever angle the mud decided, channels of shallow water thread between them, and the flats stretch away towards the far bank. A church tower marks the village against the hills behind. Wading birds are working the edges. In a few hours none of this will look the same. Wet sand and channel water take up most of the lower half and separate only slowly by tone, which is the sort of gradual progress that makes an evening disappear without you noticing. The boats are your anchors, the church tower fixes the skyline, and everything between them fills in last. Quiet to build and quiet to look at, and well suited to somebody who works at a puzzle in short sittings.
