Not every hero starts at level 1. The Genius Guide to Apprentice-Level Characters from Rogue Genius Games introduces a pre-level framework for Pathfinder 1e — rules for playing characters who are still learning their craft before they've earned their first full class level. It's a perfect tool for origin story campaigns, introducing new players to the system gradually, or simply adding a layer of narrative grounding to character creation that the core rules skip over. Before the Adventure Begins Owen K.C. Stephens designed the apprentice-level system to be lightweight and easy to drop into any campaign. Use it for a single session prologue or as the foundation for a full origin arc — either way, it gives characters a story before the story starts.
