At just 13 years old, Grace Wisher worked alongside Mary Pickersgill to create the Star-Spangled Banner, the flag that would come to represent the United States. Though history remembers the flag, many Americans have never heard her name. This design honors Grace Wisher and the countless Black women whose hands, hearts, labor, and perseverance have been woven into the fabric of America since the very beginning. For generations, Black women have helped build this nation as educators, entrepreneurs, artists, activists, mothers, and community leaders. Yet too often their stories have remained untold.
