The Holding CellInside the House of Slaves • Gorée Island, Senegal • 2023This is one of the cells where enslaved African men were held before being forced onto ships. The green patina on the walls is from centuries of decay. The wooden beams overhead are original. The single narrow opening provided the only light.In spaces like this, 20 to 25 men were packed together for weeks, sometimes months. They had no idea what awaited them. Just darkness, uncertainty, and the weight of iron chains.Standing here, you can feel the claustrophobia. The erasure.
