Unfortunately, for many older Americans this additional phase of life is often associated with lower quality of life due to declining physical, cognitive, and social activity. By participating in OASIS lifelong learning and service opportunities, older adults can increase their intellectual stimulation, improve their overall health, increase their level of social engagement, and build their skills in a variety of areas. A growing body of research provides evidence that participating in lifelong learning and service opportunities can effectively delay or even prevent the onset of chronic conditions and foster “successful” aging. The MacArthur Foundation Study of Aging in America found that the key factors for preserving a high quality of life are maintaining a low risk for disease, a high level of engagement with one’s community, and high physical and cognitive function.
