At the age of nineteen he enlisted as a private in the A.I.F., served with distinction in the 27th Infantry Battalion in Gallipoli, England and France and returned to Australia in 1919 with the rank of lieutenant. It is very rare for any man to become a legend in his own lifetime; more particularly in his native city, but Sir Thomas Playford has become this and more.
