A sandy track through cool pine woods opens without warning onto the shore. Beyond the last of the trees there is a mile of pale sand, marram grass holding the dunes together, and a horizon that simply keeps going. The light is the bright, scoured kind that comes off open water on a clear day, and the beach is empty enough that the only marks on it belong to the tide. Shade behind you, glare ahead, and the sound of the pines somewhere at your back. This one is about restraint rather than incident. Long stretches of sand and sky separate only by tone, so the pine shade at the top of the picture is where you start and the dune grass offers your next foothold. The middle takes patience and rewards it. Finished, it is the calmest thing we have made and the one people say they leave on the table longest before breaking it up. It suits anyone who would rather have space than clutter.
