The Sleeper Train by Mick Jackson, illustrated by Baljinder Kaur, is a bedtime picture book about a girl who is far too excited to sleep. As night falls, she and her family board a n overnight train that will carry them across the Indian countryside while they sleep. The trouble is, with the carriage rocking and villages slipping past the window, sleep is the last thing on her mind. To settle herself, she starts running through all the places she has fallen asleep before: the warm middle of her parents' bed, a hotel by the sea, a tent in a field, her mom's old room at her grandparents' house. Baljinder Kaur sets the journey in her parents' homeland, and her illustrations are full of close, specific detail, from the food and the fabrics to the small rituals of a family settling in for the night.
