The SR-71 was powered to Mach 3.2+ by two J-58 engines. They used an inlet cone at the front of the engine to regulate the airflow for operating both the turbojet and afterburner. Most supersonic jet engines work with this concept in mind as well, but the SR-71 was unique in that once at high speeds it basically ran off full afterburner. It could evade SAMs with ease and was the fastest air-breathing thing in the sky.
