The Sun Sets Beneath the Ocean is an artist book by Zahra Killeen-Chance and Solomon Mortimer. The book follows their journey through the cycles of exploration and contemplation of the Whanganui environs and family life while in residence at the Tylee Cottage in 2021. Ben Davis has selected and sequenced the images into a lyrical score. The book illuminates the artists aesthetic and emotional experience of occupying Tylee Cottage and is prefaced with a foreward written by Sarjeant Gallery Curator - Greg Donson. It is a companion to their exhibition by the same name at the Sarjeant Gallery Te Whare o Rehua Whanganui from March - June 2023. A tri-fold insert designed by Joeseph Salmon slips neatly into the book and provides contextual information about the artists and the residency. On one side there is a contextual essay by Greg Donson and on the other a collection of responses by artists: Conor Clarke, Marie Shannon, Roberta Thornley and Richard Orjis. These artists primarily use photography in their own art practices and are alumni of the Tylee Cottage residency. The book contains 72 plates across 140 pages and has been printed in duo tone offset and hand section sewn in an edition of 300 signed copies. It has been published in collaboration with the Sajeant Gallery Te Whare o Rehua Whanganui and with the support of Creative NZ.
