The technique traveled along the Silk Road from Asia, settling in Mallorca in the 15th century and surviving in only a few workshops today. The process is beautiful as well as laborious. Cotton and linen threads are dyed by hand, with some sections left deliberately uncolored, dried in the Mallorcan sun, and only then placed on the loom, where the 'tongues' of color form the abstract patterns that give this fabric its name.
