Three slender trees mark the low point of the land, right where it dips before climbing again into a gentle hill on the right. The ground is worked in dark green and brown, with a few pale, worn patches breaking up the color. Everything on the ground reads small and quiet next to that oversized sky. William Langson Lathrop (1859–1938) was an American painter and founder of the art colony in New Hope, Pennsylvania. He worked in a tonalist style, favoring muted earth tones and blue-greys over bright color, and often built his landscapes from memory in the studio rather than working directly in front of the scene.
