Behind the Art If you call yourself a Vancouverite, you most likely recognize these mountains. Locally referred to as “The Two Sisters” by the Coast Salish peoples, and later called “The Lions” by settlers, these twin peaks are some of Vancouver’s most iconic landmarks. I felt drawn to painting “The Two Sisters” after hearing their legend and learning of their cultural significance as symbols of strength, unity and peacemaking. This painting felt new for me in many ways- painted in a new way, in a new location. Though mountains are a "specialty" of mine, this is the first one I’ve painted live, while displaying my work at an art market. With many curious eyes watching my every brushstroke, I was humbly reminded that most paintings look like trash until you’re nearing the finish line. Now it’s a treasured piece.
